Lab: Discovery from Joan's desk to signed scope

16 min read·13 Oct 2026
Module 3 · Lab · About 60 minutes · Needs: lessons 1 and 2 (shadowing, the process map, hidden rules, the baseline and the scope page)

What you are building

ONE WEEK OF EVIDENCE, THREE FILES field notes 10 notes process map who holds waits hidden rules keyed on codes baseline 18.0% statement model drafts scope.md signed 27 Mar discovery/ process_map.csv hidden_rules.json scope.md
The finished piece: field notes become a process map, hidden rules and a baseline (blue), the model drafts the statement from them (amber), and the signed scope page is built from all of it (green).

Module 3 adds the first written piece of the engagement: Joan's process map, the problem statement, the baseline and the target. The two lessons built each part on its own. This lab runs discovery end to end, as one pass over one week's evidence, and leaves three files in the repository's discovery/ folder: process_map.csv, hidden_rules.json and scope.md. Every number on the scope page is computed from the files before it, so when Joan corrects a step or Rafael disputes a figure, you change the evidence and run the lab again. The running example is HF-88190, Greenway Garden Centre's missing shipment, which you watched Joan work on Monday 16 March. All the data is simulated.
