Lesson 1: Messages on the wire, read one line at a time

17 min read·13 Oct 2026
Module 2 · Lesson 1 · About 45 minutes · Needs: Module 1 (a server and client over stdio, the JSON-RPC message kinds) and the Module 1 lab's notes_assistant/store.py and notes/ in your repository

The situation

Thursday 10 September 2026. The prototype notes server answers Nare's searches, but only through the SDK's Client, which hides every message. Tomas asks: when an answer is wrong, how would you tell whether the model, the client or the server is at fault?

You answer by reading the wire yourself. You build the Module 2 prototype server, drive it with a client that has no SDK, and provoke every kind of message and error on purpose. One request runs through the lesson: id 1, search_notes for "nap study", which should return lab-sync-2026-09-02.
