What happened
On 3 June 2025 Windsurf, the AI coding tool, said Anthropic had cut its direct access to Claude models. Its chief executive, Varun Mohan, posted on X: "With less than five days of notice, Anthropic decided to cut off nearly all of our first-party capacity to all Claude 3.x models." He added that Windsurf had told Anthropic "this is not our desire" and "we wanted to pay them for the full capacity" (Maxwell Zeff, TechCrunch, 3 June 2025).
Windsurf said it had "some capacity with third-party inference providers, but not enough", so users "may see short-term availability issues". Weeks earlier, at the Claude 4 launch, Windsurf had not received direct access at all; it offered "bring your own key" instead, which developers called "more expensive and complicated". Anthropic's spokesperson said it was "prioritizing capacity for sustainable partnerships". TechCrunch spoke to one customer who had moved to Cursor to use Claude 4. No cost figure was published.
