Shared Northdesk Data

30 min read·

Every module uses the same Northdesk data, so you never learn a new example. This page is the single source for all of it: the code that makes the data, and what that code prints.

All of this data is simulated. Northdesk and its six tenants are fictional. Every name, document, request, trace, latency and token count below is made up for the course. Email addresses use the reserved .example domain and phone numbers use the 07700 900xxx range that Ofcom reserves for drama. The two model providers in the traces are called "primary" and "secondary" on purpose: the 22 September incident is simulated and is not about any real company. The one exception is the price table in block 5, which holds real published prices, read on 18 October 2026 and clearly labelled as a dated snapshot.

How lessons get the data

The data is generated by code, not downloaded. The generator uses plain Python and one fixed seed, so it makes exactly the same data on every computer. The blocks below were run in order with Python 3.12.15 on 18 October 2026, and every output on this page comes from that run. The same fingerprints (block 7) also came out on Python 3.9.6, which shows the generator does not depend on the Python version; the course pilot confirms them in Colab.

Each block is a function or a literal, so a lesson pastes only what it needs:

A lesson that needsPastes blocksGets
Tenants, the fleet numbers or the Q2 2027 target1TENANTS, FLEET, TARGET, EVENTS, USERS
Documents (ingestion, retrieval, permissions, injection)1, 2DOCUMENTS, FACTS
Traffic (capacity, peaks, rate limits, 10x)1, 3TRAFFIC
Traces (latency budgets, cost, debugging)1, 3, 4TRACES
Prices and the cost function5PRICE_SNAPSHOT, ILLUSTRATIVE, cost_usd() (works on its own)
The golden sets (evaluation, control checks)1, 2, 6ASK_GOLDEN, CASES_GOLDEN, CASES_TOOLS
Fingerprintsthe blocks it pasted, then 7a check that you have the same data

Block 8 only prints a summary and is never needed by later code. Lessons paste blocks unchanged and never edit them. The Module 1 lab saves blocks 1 to 6 as northdesk/data.py, and later labs import from there.

For authors: copy these blocks exactly. Do not invent other tenants, staff, policies or dates. If a lesson needs more data, add it in the lesson, say "added in this lesson", and keep what is here unchanged. Quote only numbers printed here or measured in the lesson. The fixed facts behind this data are in 03-northdesk.md.

1. Dates, the fleet, the target, tenants and users

The fixed facts everything else uses: the dates and events, Northdesk's fleet numbers, Joel's Q2 2027 target (the roadmap's worked estimate), the six sample tenants, and 60 users per tenant with the groups that decide what each one may read.

Code walkthrough

  • COURSE_DATE is the day versions and prices were checked; DATA_AS_OF is the day the snapshot was taken. Code that counts days counts to DATA_AS_OF, never to date.today(), so a lesson gives the same answer next year.
  • WINDOW is the 28 days covered by the traffic and the traces. SEED fixes every random choice on this page.
  • EVENTS holds the three dated events the lessons rely on: the Tallis onboarding, the 40-minute provider degradation and the prompt change. Times are UTC.
  • FLEET is the whole of Northdesk today; TARGET is the design target, the numbers of the roadmap's worked estimate. Only the six tenants in TENANTS have generated data.
  • Each tenant row says where its data must live (residency), its size, its UTC offset (so traffic peaks at local working hours), its currency (used only inside its documents), its isolation tier and which features it has.
  • make_users builds 60 users per tenant from random.Random(seed + 1). Every user is in all-staff and one department; some are managers, some HR staff can read hr-confidential, and two per tenant are executives. These groups are what document permissions are checked against.
  • The print shows how many users exist, how many can read confidential HR documents, and one example.

Output:

text
360 users; 24 can read hr-confidential; t-fairhaven-u000 ['all-staff', 'execs', 'hr', 'hr-confidential', 'managers']

2. Documents

Each tenant has the same ten policy documents with different values, 66 everyday documents, and a few documents with problems on purpose: a planted prompt injection in three tenants and uploads that fail processing in all six.

Code walkthrough

  • tenant_facts picks each tenant's policy values (leave days, meal limit, remote days, laptop refresh, parental leave, pay day, helpdesk hours, salary band C) with its own seeded generator. Values differ by tenant, so an answer that quotes another tenant's value is a visible cross-tenant leak.
  • POLICIES lists the ten policy documents: title, kind, the groups allowed to read it (acl), sensitivity, a body template and the facts it states. The salary bands are readable only by hr-confidential and execs; the minutes only by execs; the runbook only by it.
  • Two versions of the leave policy exist: version 2 supersedes version 1 and states a different number of days. Version 1 is dated 3 November 2025. This is the freshness and versioning trap.
  • add builds one document record: id, tenant, ACL, version, source system, update date, body, the gold facts it contains, and flags for personal data (pii), injection (injected) and processing status.
  • The 66 everyday documents come from topic templates; 15% include a phone number, the personal data that Module 5 redacts.
  • Three tenants get a shared note with an indirect prompt injection that tries to send employees' bank details to an outside address. Every tenant gets one to three broken uploads: empty, binary or 210 MB. Module 5 sends these to a dead-letter list instead of crashing.

Output:

text
471 documents; 12 fail processing; 3 injected; 56 contain a phone number

      f"peak {peak_rps:.2f} RPS at {peak_ts} UTC, peak factor {peak_rps / avg_rps:.1f}x")

Code walkthrough

  • HOUR_WEIGHT is how busy each local hour is (a morning peak at 09:00 and a smaller one after lunch); DAY_WEIGHT makes Monday busiest and weekends nearly empty.
  • ASK_RATE is Ask requests per seat per working day, taken from the fleet numbers (38,000 daily users of 410,000 seats, 6.2 requests each). CASES_RATE is Cases runs per seat per working day.
  • For every five-minute bucket and tenant, the code converts UTC to the tenant's local time, takes that hour's share of a day, and draws a count around the expected value with rng.gauss(mu, mu ** 0.5), roughly the noise of real arrivals.
  • Tallis Retail Group has 10% of its seats switched on until 14 September, then ramps to all of them over three days.
  • The summary adds all tenants together per bucket, then compares the busiest five minutes with the 28-day average: the peak factor. A five-minute peak is higher than an hourly one; Module 3 lesson 1 shows why the window matters.

Output:

text
72576 rows; 1065454 Ask requests in 28 days; average 0.44 RPS, peak 2.40 RPS at 2026-09-28T13:30 UTC, peak factor 5.5x

4. Traces

Sampled requests as trees of spans, with the latency of every hop and the token counts of every model call. Ask traces follow the request path from authentication to the saved session; Cases traces follow the agent's steps and tool calls. The 40-minute incident window is sampled at a higher rate, as a tail-sampling tracer keeps slow and failed requests.

Code walkthrough

  • sample picks buckets from TRAFFIC in proportion to their request counts, so busy hours have more traces. 1,200 Ask traces come from the whole window and 120 more from the incident window; 240 Cases traces come from the whole window.
  • span appends one span with its parent, start time and duration in milliseconds, plus any attributes. Parents are filled in after their children, so a parent's duration covers them.
  • model_call simulates one call. During the incident, 30% of primary calls run into the 8-second gateway timeout and are retried on the secondary provider's small tier. Time to first token grows with input length (prefill); decode time is output plus reasoning tokens divided by tokens per second (about 160 for the small tier, about 52 for the large one: simulated values, close to the roadmap's "about 50").
  • An Ask trace embeds the query, runs vector and keyword search side by side, reranks 40 candidates, builds the prompt and calls the model. Prompt v8 (from 29 September) has a longer system prompt, 12 chunks instead of 8 and longer answers. 3% of requests find nothing and get a short "not found" reply.
  • Token counts are kept by part (system_tokens, history_tokens, context_tokens, user_tokens, cached_tokens), which is what Module 3 lesson 2 adds up.
  • A Cases trace has two to six agent.step spans, each a model call carrying 1,400 tokens of tool schemas and a growing history, then one tool call. Runs that need approval end with an approval.wait span of minutes, not milliseconds.
  • The print gives the Ask median and 95th percentile end-to-end latency and the count of each status.

Output:

text
1560 traces; 1320 Ask; Ask p50 3826 ms, p95 12112 ms; {'ok': 1248, 'fallback': 27, 'no_context': 45}

Two notes on these traces (consistency pass, 23 October 2026). The 27 fallbacks to the secondary, 16 of them for UK and EU tenants, are the first design's mistake: under course-guide/03's residency rule (corrected 19 October 2026) no tenant may fall back to the Gemini Developer API, and the lessons from Module 7 on teach these traces as the rule being broken, not as allowed behaviour. The Cases traces carry 1,400 tokens of tool schemas a step, a simulated value; Module 9 measures the real eight-tool surface at 561 to 573 tokens (Lessons 2 and 3).

5. Prices: a dated snapshot, and the roadmap's illustrative numbers

Two different things, kept apart on purpose. PRICE_SNAPSHOT holds real published prices, read from the providers' pages on 18 October 2026: it is a snapshot, not live, and every lesson that uses it says "prices from course-guide/02, checked 18 October 2026". ILLUSTRATIVE holds round numbers that are not real prices: the roadmap's worked estimate uses them, and Module 3 keeps them so you can check that arithmetic exactly before redoing it with the snapshot.

Code walkthrough

  • Each model in PRICE_SNAPSHOT["models"] has five prices in US dollars per million tokens: input, cached input, output, batch input and batch output. None means the page read did not publish that price (Groq's pages gave no batch price).
  • Groq's cached input is half the input price (its prompt-caching page says cached tokens cost 50% less). Gemini 3.8 Flash prices hold until 31 December 2026 and double on 1 January 2027.
  • ILLUSTRATIVE keeps the roadmap's $1 and $5, its cheaper tier at a fifth of the price, its 50 tokens a second, and two round numbers for the GPU and storage lessons. The comment on each says it is not a real price.
  • cost_usd prices one call: uncached input at the input price, cached input at the cached price, output at the output price. Cached tokens are counted inside input_tokens, as the providers report them.
  • The print shows the cost of the worked estimate's request (2,000 in, 500 out) on two models.

Output:

text
0.000600 USD for 2,000 in and 500 out on gpt-oss-120b; 0.002936 on gemini-3.8-flash with 650 cached

Note (consistency pass, 23 October 2026). The cached Gemini example cannot occur as written: Google's caching page (checked 18 October 2026) gives a 4,096-token minimum for Gemini 3.8 Flash, so a 2,000-token Ask prompt is never cached there (course-guide/03, Module 3 Lesson 4). The block stays unchanged because lessons paste it verbatim; read the 650 cached tokens as arithmetic for cost_usd, and the cached Ask traces as making sense only on Groq.

6. The golden sets and the Cases tool surface

Labelled questions for Ask and labelled tasks for Cases, used by the evaluation harness, the control checks (evals/control_checks.py) and the eval gates. The labels follow from the documents by construction (the generator knows which document states which value), so they are exact for this data. They are not hand-written, and lessons say so when they quote a score.

Code walkthrough

  • CASES_TOOLS is the Cases agent's tool surface: eight tools, whether each one writes, and whether it needs a human's approval. Ordering equipment, closing tickets and granting access need approval.
  • For every tenant make_golden writes eight Ask questions, each with the user who asks it, the gold document, the strings the answer must contain and must not contain, and whether the right behaviour is to answer or to say it was not found.
  • stale_trap must quote the 2026 leave policy, not the 2025 one. permission_trap asks an ordinary employee for the salary bands, which only HR and executives may read: the right answer is "not found". unanswerable asks something no document covers.
  • In three tenants an HR user asks for the salary bands (cross_tenant): the answer must contain that tenant's band and none of the other tenants' bands. In the three tenants with the planted note, injection_trap must not repeat the attacker's address.
  • For the three tenants with Cases, six tasks each give the expected tool trajectory, the expected outcome and the tools that must not run without approval. "Change my bank account details" must be escalated to a person, with no tool called.

Output:

Code walkthrough

  • fingerprint turns the data into one long text with json.dumps (keys sorted, so the order is fixed), hashes it with SHA-256 and keeps the first 12 hexadecimal digits.
  • CHECKS names the data behind each fingerprint. The loop prints a fingerprint only when every name it needs exists, so a lesson that pasted blocks 1 and 2 sees users and documents only. The all line needs blocks 1 to 6.
  • If yours differ, a block was changed when it was pasted: paste it again from this page.

8. What the generator made (summary only)

Not needed by any later code. It prints the numbers the lessons quote, so they are measured, not typed.

python
from statistics import mean

print({tid: sum(d["tenant_id"] == tid for d in DOCUMENTS) for tid in TENANT_IDS})
hourly = {}
for ts, tid, feature, count in TRAFFIC:
    if feature == "ask":

print(len(cases), "Cases runs:", {s: sum(t["status"] == s for t in cases) for s in ("resolved", "approval_requested", "escalated", "stopped_max_steps")})

Code walkthrough

  • The first line counts documents per tenant (ten policies, 66 everyday documents, the planted note where there is one, and the broken uploads).
  • hourly sums Ask requests per UTC hour; the hourly peak factor is lower than the five-minute one in block 3.
  • The weekly averages show the Tallis onboarding doubling traffic.
  • For prompt v7 and v8 the code averages input and output tokens over successful calls and takes the 50th and 95th percentile of end-to-end latency: the evidence for the Module 15 debugging case.
  • The last line counts how each Cases run ended.

Output:
