Shared Hollin Data

35 min read·13 Oct 2026

Every module uses the same small set of Hollin data, so you are never learning a new example. Lessons paste in the blocks they need. This page is the single source for all of them.

All of it is simulated. Hollin Home Appliances is a made-up company. Every name, product, part number, price, case, message and date below is fictional. Web addresses use the reserved .example domain, so none of them lead anywhere.

For authors: copy these blocks into lessons exactly as written. Do not invent different document IDs, prices, codes or people. If a lesson needs more data, add it in the lesson, say "added in this lesson", and keep what is here unchanged. Run the blocks in the order shown: later blocks use names defined earlier. Every count quoted on this page came from running the blocks with the course environment on 9 October 2026.

Money is in pounds sterling throughout.

Dates and the document helper

python
from datetime import date

COURSE_DATE = date(2026, 10, 9)   # "today" in every lesson; never use date.today()
SNAPSHOT = date(2026, 10, 2) # the day the corpus below was exported

SOURCE = {"policy": "help-centre", "faq": "help-centre", "notice": "help-centre",
          "manual": "manuals", "bulletin": "service-portal", "ticket": "ticket-system",
          "partner": "partner-portal", "internal": "finance-share", "forum": "community-forum"}
AUTHORITY = {"policy": 1.0, "notice": 1.0, "manual": 0.9, "bulletin": 0.9, "partner": 0.8,
             "internal": 0.8, "faq": 0.7, "ticket": 0.3, "forum": 0.1}

def doc(id, type, title, updated, text, acl=("public",), products=(), status="current", authority=None):
    """One document record. acl lists the groups allowed to see it."""
    return {"id": id, "type": type, "title": title, "updated": updated, "text": text,
            "acl": list(acl), "products": list(products), "status": status,
            "source": SOURCE[type], "authority": AUTHORITY[type] if authority is None else authority}

DOCS = []

Code walkthrough

  • COURSE_DATE is the course's "today". Any lesson that works out how old a document is, or whether a repair is late, uses it, so the answer is the same whenever you run the lesson. SNAPSHOT is when the corpus was exported; the update batch near the end of this page arrives after it.
  • SOURCE says which Hollin system each type of document comes from. Module 2 treats these as separate source systems.
  • AUTHORITY is how far Hollin trusts each type: official policies and safety notices at 1.0, community forum posts at 0.1. Module 6 uses it as a ranking signal.
  • doc(...) builds one record with the same fields every time. acl (access control list) names the groups allowed to see the document; "public" means everyone. status is "current" or "archived".
  • DOCS = [] starts the corpus. The next blocks add to it.

Products

python
PRODUCTS = {
    "X200": {"name": "X200 Blender", "model": "HL-X200-UK", "launched": "2025-06-01"},
    "X300": {"name": "X300 Pro Blender", "model": "HL-X300-UK", "launched": "2026-04-10"},
    "K50":  {"name": "K50 Smart Kettle", "model": "HL-K50-UK", "launched": "2025-09-09"},
    "P9":   {"name": "P9 Air Purifier", "model": "HL-P9-UK", "launched": "2026-07-07"},
    "C70":  {"name": "C70 Coffee Machine", "model": "HL-C70-UK", "launched": "2026-02-15"},
}
print(len(PRODUCTS), "products:", ", ".join(p["name"] for p in PRODUCTS.values()))

Code walkthrough

  • PRODUCTS maps Hollin's short product code to its full name, the model number printed on the appliance, and its launch date.
  • The short codes (X200, K50) appear in the products field of documents, so a lesson can filter documents by product.
  • The print line confirms the block ran: it prints 5 products and their names.

The corpus

Forty documents in eleven blocks. Each block is a few related documents. Several are planted on purpose, so that retrieval has something to get wrong:

]

Code walkthrough

  • DOCS += [...] adds six policy documents to the corpus. Each is one call to doc(...) with an ID, a type, a title, the date it was last updated, and its text.
  • pol-warranty-2026 is the current warranty: 2 years on every appliance, 5 years on blender motors, cracked jars not covered.
  • pol-warranty-2024 is the old version, kept on the help centre with status="archived". It says motors are covered for 2 years and cracked jars are covered. A retriever that ignores status will happily serve it.
  • All six have the default acl, ("public",), so everyone may see them.

        "light flashes white, then choose Add appliance in the app.", products=["K50"]),
]

Code walkthrough

  • Eight short manual pages, each tagged with the product it belongs to in products.
  • man-x200-errors and man-x300-errors both define E4, with different meanings. A search for "E4" should find both, and an answer should say which blender it is talking about.
  • Model numbers (HL-X200-UK), part numbers (BLD-X200) and the rare material name Tritan are the kind of exact strings that keyword search finds easily and embedding search can miss.

]

Code walkthrough

  • Seven help-centre answers, all public.
  • faq-warranty-claim-copy is a near-duplicate of faq-warranty-claim: a different title, the same text, and an exclamation mark at the end. It was copied by hand during a help-centre migration and never removed. It has a lower authority (0.6) so a ranking that uses authority prefers the original.
  • Two copies of the same text waste two of the few places in a result list. Module 2 detects the copy at ingestion; Module 8 collapses it after retrieval.

        "2026 may take 2 extra working days."),
]

Code walkthrough

  • PARTNERS_AND_STAFF is the access list for service bulletins: Hollin staff and the repair partners may read them; customers may not.
  • sb-109, sb-112 and sb-114 are service bulletins: repair instructions for technicians. sb-114 is withdrawn in the 8 October update batch near the end of this page.
  • ntc-x200-recall is a public safety notice. It matters most: a customer with a jar from batch B-2291 must be told, even when they asked about something else.
  • ntc-repair-centre-move is time-limited: it only applies to repairs booked from 1 to 16 October 2026. Module 6 uses it for freshness, Module 12 for an update.

        "FLT-P9-HEPA filter £7.25. Do not share outside Finance.", acl=["finance"]),
]

Code walkthrough

  • Three support tickets, visible to staff only. tkt-30412 is Ellie Shaw's first case. tkt-30501 records an agent giving the stale 2-year answer; its text contains the wrong figure and the right one, which makes it a confusing thing to retrieve.
  • ptn-handbook is for all partners. Each partner agreement is for one partner only (partner:brook-street or partner:calder-fix) plus Hollin staff. Lucy at Brook Street must never see Calder Fix's rates.
  • int-parts-cost is visible to the finance group only. Support agents are staff but not finance, so they must not see it either.

Community forum

        "Posted by coffeecat: I descale my C70 with white vinegar instead of the Hollin tablets and it "
        "seems fine.", products=["C70"]),
]

Code walkthrough

  • Two posts from Hollin's public community forum. Anyone can write there, so the forum's authority is 0.1.
  • frm-x200-tips starts with genuine advice and then carries an injected instruction: text written to be obeyed by an AI system that reads it. It asks for card numbers to be sent to an outside address. It is the only injected instruction in the corpus. Module 9 shows it reaching the model; Module 12 and the capstone defend against it.
  • frm-c70-vinegar contradicts the C70 user guide below, which says not to use vinegar.

The C70 user guide (Markdown with headings and tables)

python
C70_GUIDE = """# C70 Coffee Machine: User Guide

## 2. Drink programmes

| Americano | 150 ml | Medium |

## 3. Error codes

|---|---|---|
| F2 | Water tank empty or not seated | Fill the tank and push it down until it clicks |
| F5 | Descaling overdue | Run the descaling programme |
| F8 | Grinder blocked | Contact Hollin support |

## 4. Descaling
Descale every 300 cups, or when F5 shows. Use one Hollin DSC-1 descaling tablet in a full tank. Do not use vinegar: it damages the seals and is not covered by the warranty.
It takes about 25 minutes."""
DOCS.append(doc("guide-c70", "manual", "C70 Coffee Machine: User Guide", "2026-02-15", C70_GUIDE, products=["C70"]))

Code walkthrough

  • C70_GUIDE is one longer document written in Markdown: a title, four numbered sections, and two tables.
  • It is the course's main example for chunking (Module 3). Split it by headings and each section stands alone. Split it every 200 characters and a table row lands in one chunk with its header in another.
  • The last line, "It takes about 25 minutes.", only makes sense next to the line before it: "it" is the descaling programme. Module 3 uses it for the dangling pronoun problem.
  • DOCS.append(...) adds the guide as one document with the ID guide-c70.

The P9 quick-start page (as a good PDF parser should return it)

python
P9_PAGE = """P9 Air Purifier: Quick-Start Guide, page 2

| Turbo | 320 m3/h | 52 dB |

Filter

DOCS.append(doc("pdf-p9-guide", "manual", "P9 Air Purifier: Quick-Start Guide (PDF, page 2)", "2026-07-07",
                P9_PAGE, products=["P9"]))

Code walkthrough

  • P9_PAGE is page 2 of the P9 purifier's printed guide, as clean text: a heading, a table of fan settings, and the filter instructions.
  • This is the target, not what you start with. The block "The P9 page as a real PDF" near the end of this page writes the same content into a PDF file, with a running header, a page footer and a hyphenated word. Module 2 parses that PDF and compares what comes out with P9_PAGE.
  • Questions such as "how loud is the P9 on the night setting" can only be answered from the table row Night | 60 m3/h | 24 dB.

The spare-parts price list (from a CSV export)

python
import csv, io

PARTS_CSV = """part,product,description,price_gbp

PMP-X300,X300,Vacuum pump,39.00
FLT-P9-HEPA,P9,HEPA filter,29.99

rows = list(csv.DictReader(io.StringIO(PARTS_CSV)))
table = "| Part | Product | Description | Price |\n|---|---|---|---|\n" + "\n".join(
    f"| {r['part']} | {r['product']} | {r['description']} | £{r['price_gbp']} |" for r in rows)
DOCS.append(doc("parts-price-list", "policy", "Spare parts price list", "2026-04-20",
                "Spare parts price list (prices include VAT)\n" + table))
print(len(rows), "parts; first row:", rows[0])

Code walkthrough

  • PARTS_CSV is the parts shop's price export: one header line and seven parts, with public retail prices in pounds.
  • csv.DictReader(io.StringIO(...)) reads the text as a CSV file and gives one dictionary per row, keyed by the header.
  • The next lines turn the rows into a Markdown table, because a table with a header row reads well both to a person and to a language model. Raw comma-separated numbers lose their column names once they are cut into pieces.
  • The table becomes the document parts-price-list. The print shows 7 parts and the first row.
  • These are retail prices. Hollin's cost prices are a different, finance-only document (int-parts-cost).

  • CALDER_THREAD is a two-message email thread between Calder Fix and Hollin, cleaned into reading order: oldest message first, no quoted copies, no signatures.
  • Its access list is Calder Fix and Hollin staff. Brook Street must not see it.
  • Module 2 starts from the raw email file (later on this page), where the reply sits on top and quotes the original, and produces this clean thread.

The repair collection web page (main content only)

python
WEB_COLLECTION = """Courier collection for repairs

Collections run Monday to Friday. When you book, choose a morning slot (8am to 1pm) or an afternoon slot (1pm to 6pm). Pack the appliance in any sturdy box; the courier brings the label. If you miss the collection, rebook online at no cost."""
DOCS.append(doc("web-repair-collection", "faq", "Courier collection for repairs", "2026-05-12", WEB_COLLECTION))

from collections import Counter
print(len(DOCS), "documents")
print(Counter(d["type"] for d in DOCS))
print("words:", sum(len(d["text"].split()) for d in DOCS))

Code walkthrough

  • WEB_COLLECTION is the main content of one help-centre web page, without the menus, cookie banner and footer around it. The raw page, with all of that, is in the Module 2 section below.
  • DOCS.append(...) adds it as the fortieth and last document of the snapshot.
  • The last three lines check the corpus. It prints 40 documents, the count per type (manual: 10, faq: 8, policy: 7, partner: 4, bulletin: 3, ticket: 3, notice: 2, forum: 2, internal: 1) and words: 1448. That is small enough to embed on a Colab CPU in seconds.

Check the corpus runs (optional)

python
%pip install -q sentence-transformers==6.1.0 rank-bm25==0.2.2
python
import time
from rank_bm25 import BM25Okapi
from sentence_transformers import SentenceTransformer

bm25 = BM25Okapi([d["text"].lower().split() for d in DOCS])
model = SentenceTransformer("BAAI/bge-small-en-v1.5")
start = time.perf_counter()
vectors = model.encode([d["text"] for d in DOCS], normalize_embeddings=True)
print(f"embedded {len(DOCS)} documents in {time.perf_counter() - start:.1f} s, shape {vectors.shape}")

def top3(query):
    keyword = bm25.get_scores(query.lower().split()).argsort()[::-1][:3]
    dense = (vectors @ model.encode(query, normalize_embeddings=True)).argsort()[::-1][:3]
    return [DOCS[i]["id"] for i in keyword], [DOCS[i]["id"] for i in dense]

for q in ["HL-X300-UK", "how many years is the X300 Pro motor covered for"]:
    print(q, "->", top3(q))

Code walkthrough

  • The install cell adds the two libraries this check needs, at the versions the course uses (see course-guide/02).
  • BM25Okapi(...) builds a keyword index over the documents, each split into lower-case words. SentenceTransformer("BAAI/bge-small-en-v1.5") downloads a small embedding model (about 130 MB, once) and runs it on the CPU.
  • model.encode(...) turns all 40 documents into vectors. normalize_embeddings=True makes each vector unit length, so a dot product is the cosine similarity. The print reports the time and the shape (40, 384): 40 documents, 384 numbers each.
  • top3(query) returns the three best documents by keyword score and by vector similarity.
  • On the course machine (a Mac laptop CPU, 9 October 2026) embedding took under half a second once the model was downloaded. For HL-X300-UK, keyword search misses the X300 specification page: splitting on spaces leaves the token as hl-x300-uk. with the full stop attached, which matches nothing. Vector search finds it first. For the motor question both methods rank ticket tkt-30501, which repeats the stale "2 years", above the current warranty terms. Modules 4 and 6 explain both failures and fix them.

Labelled questions

Thirty-six questions with the documents that answer them and a short expected answer. Modules 4, 6, 7, 8 and 11 measure retrieval against them; Modules 9 and 11 check answers. Each question has a type:

ids = {d["id"] for d in DOCS}
assert all(rel <= ids for _, _, rel, _, _ in QUESTIONS), "a label names a missing document"
print(len(QUESTIONS), "questions;", Counter(t for *_, t in QUESTIONS))

Code walkthrough

  • Each question is a tuple: an ID, the question as a user would type it, the set of document IDs that answer it, a short expected answer, and its type.
  • Questions are lower case and loosely worded on purpose: that is how people type into a search box.
  • q02 has one right document; the archived terms and ticket tkt-30501 both say "2 years" and will compete with it.
  • q05's expected answer is true in the 2 October export; after the 8 October batch the notice says 3 extra working days. Module 11 grades each answer against the corpus the run searched (EXPECTED_SINCE), and every later module does the same. q05 is also worded far from the notice: the package never retrieves it, so q05 stays a recorded known failure.
  • q14 and q15 are answerable only by staff or partners. For a customer, the right behaviour is to find nothing.
  • q36 is the hardest no-answer question: it sounds like it belongs to the corpus, and the corpus has descaling pages for two other products, but nothing for the X300 Pro.
  • The assert checks every labelled ID exists in DOCS, so a typo in a label fails loudly. The print shows 36 questions and the count per type.

Users and what they may see

python
USERS = {
    "ellie": {"name": "Ellie Shaw", "role": "customer", "groups": {"public"}},

}

def can_see(user, d):
    return bool(USERS[user]["groups"] & set(d["acl"]))

# (user, question, document IDs that must never reach this user)
ACL_PROBES = [
    ("lucy", "what labour rate does Calder Fix get", {"ptn-calder-rates", "eml-calder-pump"}),

    ("grace", "cost price of the FLT-P9-HEPA filter", {"int-parts-cost"}),
]
print({u: sum(can_see(u, d) for d in DOCS) for u in USERS})

Code walkthrough

  • USERS holds the five people who use the assistant in examples. Each has a set of groups. The two repair partners also have a tenant: the partner company they belong to.
  • can_see(user, d) is the whole permission rule: a user may see a document if any of their groups is on the document's access list. The & is set intersection.
  • ACL_PROBES are leak tests. Each pairs a user with a question designed to pull in a document they must never see. Modules 5, 9, 12 and the capstone run them.
  • The print counts how many of the 40 documents each user may see: ellie 29, grace 39, owen 40, lucy 34, dan 35. Grace sees everything except the cost prices; only Owen, in Finance, sees all 40.

Service cases (structured data, never embedded)

python
import sqlite3

db = sqlite3.connect(":memory:")
db.execute("""CREATE TABLE cases (case_id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY, customer TEXT, product TEXT,
              opened TEXT, status TEXT, partner TEXT, labour_minutes INTEGER)""")

])
print(db.execute("SELECT case_id, status, partner FROM cases WHERE customer = ?", ("Ellie Shaw",)).fetchall())

Code walkthrough

  • Repair cases live in Hollin's case system, a database that changes every minute. They are never embedded: a question such as "where is my repair" is answered by a query, not by retrieval. Module 1 makes that decision; Module 7 routes to it; Module 10 writes SQL for it.
  • sqlite3.connect(":memory:") creates a temporary database that lives only while the notebook runs.
  • The table has seven cases. Ellie Shaw has two: case 30412 (her first E7, closed) and case 30540 (E7 again, now in the workshop at Brook Street Repairs). Case 30533 is the pump job in the Calder Fix email thread.
  • The ? placeholder lets the database insert the value safely. The print shows Ellie's two cases.

Ellie's conversation

python
CONVERSATION = [
    ("user", "My X200 keeps stopping and shows E7."),
    ("assistant", "E7 means the motor has overheated. Unplug the blender for 20 minutes before using it "
                  "again. [man-x200-errors]"),
    ("user", "I did that last month too. Is it covered?"),
]
STANDALONE = "Is a repeated E7 motor overheating fault on the X200 blender covered by the warranty?"
EXPECTED_ANSWER = ("Yes. Blender motors on the X200 are covered for 5 years under the 2026 warranty terms; "
                   "book a repair with proof of purchase. [pol-warranty-2026] [faq-warranty-claim]")

Code walkthrough

  • CONVERSATION is Ellie's chat on 9 October 2026, as (speaker, text) pairs. She wrote in to Hollin support; every module replays her chat through Hollin Answers in development, because no customer uses it before 30 November. Her last message, "Is it covered?", means nothing on its own: "it" is the E7 fault on her X200.
  • STANDALONE is the question rewritten so it can be searched without the history. Module 7 produces it with a model; Module 10 uses it for conversational RAG.
  • EXPECTED_ANSWER is a good answer with its citations, for checking.

The prototype's query log

Before the course starts, Kwame built a quick prototype: every document embedded with BAAI/bge-small-en-v1.5, the top 3 by cosine similarity, no filters, no permissions. Six support agents tried it from 21 September to 2 October 2026. This is part of its log. The top3 lists are what that retriever really returns on this corpus (computed 9 October 2026); the times, feedback and escalations are simulated.

python
# (time, query, top 3 retrieved, feedback, escalated to a person)
QUERY_LOG = [
    ("2026-09-21 09:14", "x300 motor warranty how long", ["tkt-30501", "pol-warranty-2026", "man-x300-specs"], "down", True),

    ("2026-10-01 11:56", "cracked jar covered?", ["ntc-x200-recall", "man-x200-cleaning", "pol-warranty-2024"], "down", True),
]
print(sum(e for *_, e in QUERY_LOG), "of", len(QUERY_LOG), "escalated")

Code walkthrough

  • Each entry is one query an agent typed, the three document IDs the prototype retrieved, the agent's thumbs up or down (or None), and whether the agent gave up and escalated.
  • The failures are the course's agenda. The motor question ranks ticket tkt-30501, which repeats the stale "2 years", above the current terms. The cracked jar question retrieves the archived 2024 terms, which say cracked jars are covered, and misses the current terms. "E4 on blender" retrieves both blenders' pages, but the agent's customer had an X300 Pro and the answer led with the X200 meaning. The pump question, and "parts delivery cost", pull in the finance-only cost prices, because the prototype indexed the finance share by mistake. "e7 tips" puts the injected forum post first. "how to descale X300" retrieves confident-looking documents about other products for a question the corpus cannot answer. "repair turnaround time" spends two of its three places on the same text.
  • k50 wont pair also retrieves sb-114, the bulletin withdrawn on 8 October. Nothing in the prototype would ever remove it.
  • The print shows 5 of 10 escalated. Modules 11 and 13 mine this log.

The 8 October update batch

python
UPDATES = {
    "date": "2026-10-08",
    "upsert": [
        doc("ntc-repair-centre-move", "notice", "Repair centre move", "2026-10-08",
            "Our repair centre is moving from Cleckheaton to Wakefield. Repairs booked between 1 and 16 "
            "October 2026 may take 3 extra working days."),
        doc("sb-115", "bulletin", "SB-115: X300 Pro seal kit", "2026-10-08",
            "When replacing the X300 Pro vacuum pump, also fit the new lid seal SEAL-X300 from the same kit. "
            "Claim both parts on one case.", acl=PARTNERS_AND_STAFF, products=["X300"]),
    ],
    "delete": [("sb-114", "withdrawn: firmware 2.3 caused a new fault; wait for firmware 2.4")],
}
print(len(UPDATES["upsert"]), "upserts,", len(UPDATES["delete"]), "delete")

Code walkthrough

  • On Thursday 8 October 2026, the day before the course date, Hollin's systems produce three changes.
  • upsert means "insert, or replace if it already exists". The repair centre notice changes in place (same ID, 2 extra days becomes 3), and a new bulletin, sb-115, appears.
  • delete withdraws bulletin sb-114 with a reason. Any index, cache or answer that still serves it is serving a retracted instruction.
  • doc(...) builds the records but they are not added to DOCS: applying the batch is the lesson's job (Modules 5 and 12). The print shows 2 upserts, 1 delete.

Raw source files (Module 2)

Module 2 starts from the files as Hollin's systems hand them over, not from the clean text above. The clean DOCS entries are what a good parser should produce, so they double as the answer key for parser evaluation.

RAW_FILES = {"web-repair-collection.html": RAW_HTML}
print(len(RAW_HTML), "characters of HTML for", len(WEB_COLLECTION), "characters of content")

Code walkthrough

  • RAW_HTML is the help-centre page as the website serves it: a cookie banner, a navigation bar, the main content, a sidebar of popular links, and a legal footer.
  • Only the <main> part is the document. Everything else is boilerplate: text repeated on every page, which pollutes search results if it is indexed. Note the &nbsp; (a non-breaking space) inside "8am to 1pm", which a careless parser leaves as a strange character.
  • RAW_FILES collects the raw files by file name. The print shows the page is 976 characters of HTML for 272 characters of content.

print(RAW_FILES["calder-pump-thread.eml"].count("\n> "), "quoted lines")

Code walkthrough

  • The raw email is the reply as it arrived: headers first, the newest message on top, a signature and a confidentiality footer, then the original message quoted underneath with > at the start of each line.
  • Turning this into CALDER_THREAD means reading the headers, removing the signature and footer, un-quoting the older message, and putting both in date order. Python's built-in email module reads the headers; Module 2 does the rest.
  • The print counts the quoted lines: 4.

Code walkthrough

  • The install cell adds fpdf2, a small library that writes PDF files, and pypdf, which Module 2 uses to read them back.
  • FPDF() starts a document. set_auto_page_break(False) stops the library starting a new page when the footer is written near the bottom edge. add_page() adds an A4 page. set_font(...) picks a built-in font and size before each piece of text.
  • The first cell(...) is a running header, a line that a printed manual repeats on every page. new_x="LMARGIN", new_y="NEXT" moves to the start of the next line.
  • pdf.table(...) draws the fan-settings table as a real table, one table.row(...) per row.
  • multi_cell(80, 5, ...) writes the filter paragraph into a narrow 80 mm column, with the word "filter" split across two lines as "fil-" and "ter", the way typeset manuals hyphenate.
  • set_y(-15) jumps to 15 mm from the bottom, where the page footer goes. output(...) saves the file in the notebook's folder and the next line keeps its bytes in RAW_FILES.
  • The print shows the file size: 1633 bytes. Module 2 reads this PDF, and the running header, the footer, the table and the hyphenated word are the four things its parser has to get right.

The parts CSV

The price export is PARTS_CSV, defined in the corpus above. Add it to the raw files when a lesson needs all of them:

python
RAW_FILES["parts.csv"] = PARTS_CSV
RAW_FILES["c70-user-guide.md"] = C70_GUIDE
for name, content in RAW_FILES.items():
    print(f"{name:28} {len(content):6} {'bytes' if isinstance(content, bytes) else 'characters'}")

Code walkthrough

  • These two lines add the CSV export and the Markdown user guide to RAW_FILES. Both were already raw text; they are listed here so Module 2's "one loader for many formats" has all five formats in one dictionary: HTML, email, PDF, CSV and Markdown.
  • The loop prints each file name and its size. The PDF is bytes, the rest are text.

Added later in the course

Single modules add a few questions, cases, documents and settings to the data above. All of them are simulated. This list says which module adds each one, so you can find it.

Question types beyond the eleven above. pronoun (Module 3 Lesson 1); log, leak, injection and pressure (Module 11); mined (Module 13). Module 3 adds two questions: x01 "how long does descaling the C70 take" and x02 "my blender makes a grinding noise, what do I replace".

Evaluation cases. Module 11's evals/questions.py holds 52 cases: the 36 labelled questions, 9 from the prototype's log (L01 to L06 from Lesson 3, with Lesson 5's r02, r03, r04 and r07 merged into them, and Lesson 5's r01, r05 and r06), and 7 adversarial cases (A01 to A07). The Module 13 lab adds mined cases m01 to m03; Module 12 Lesson 5 adds r08. EXPECTED_SINCE grades q05 and L04 by the date of the corpus the run searched.

Documents added in single lessons. P9 guide page 3 (Module 2 Lesson 3); wsh-cost-notes (Module 2); frm-x200-e7-pl (Module 2 Lesson 4); pdf-p9-scan and claim-photo (Module 2 lab); web-x300-pump-costs (Module 2 incident file); the planted poison post (Module 9 Lesson 4); ptn-calder-note (Module 12 Lesson 4).

Measured bars. Dense similarity 0.62 or BM25 score 1.5 on chunks (Module 6 lab; 0.60 on whole documents); reranker bars of -6 for a passage and -5 for a sentence (Module 8); corrective RAG at 1.5 and -6, with a strip bar of -7 (Module 10); the hybrid is a weighted sum at alpha 0.8, with reciprocal rank fusion at k = 60 as the fallback.

Hand-over texts. Two named sentences, imported wherever a hand-over happens: answer.HANDOVER, the offer to pass the question to the support team, and fallback.HANDED_OVER, said when the question really has been passed on, with a reference. context.NOTHING is the offer used when retrieval finds nothing.

Service settings. HOLLIN_STORE chooses the vector store (from Module 5), HOLLIN_PG_URL the PostgreSQL connection (Module 14), and HOLLIN_PROVIDER the model provider without editing hollin/llm.py. The capstone service reads the user from the X-Hollin-User header, a stand-in for a verified login token.

Minor characters. Amir Hussain (K50, case 30455) asks in Module 7's cache examples; Nina Patel (C70, case 30552) is the "another customer's case" probe.
