Lab: Start the support desk package
Module 1 · Lab · About 60 minutes · Needs: lessons 1 to 4 of this module, and a free Groq or Gemini key (course-guide/02)
What you are building
It is Monday 8 June 2026, week 2. Lena and Ravi have labelled the 36 tickets, and Maya wants one place where the work lives instead of four notebooks. By the end of this lab the support desk is a repository, supportdesk-repo, holding one Python package, supportdesk/, that every later module adds to. It has four files. llm.py is the setup cell, so the model is created once. data.py is the shared data. baseline.py holds Lesson 1's triage call and Lesson 4's scoring, so the first number Maya sees comes with an interval. tinylm.py is TinyLM, trained once and saved. A tests/ folder checks all of it without a key. The running example is T-1001, Ana Duarte's duplicate charge.
Step 1: Lay out the repository
Every later lab finds its files by the same paths, so they start now. The first cell is the setup cell's install line. The second adds the two pinned libraries this lab needs: tokenizers for TinyLM and pytest for the tests. A Colab session forgets its files when it ends, so in Colab the repository lives on your Google Drive.
%pip install -q -U langchain langgraph langchain-groq langchain-google-genai langchain-ollama%pip install -q tokenizers==0.23.3 pytest==9.1.1import os, pathlib, sys
if pathlib.Path.cwd().name != "supportdesk-repo": # safe to rerun: never nests a second copy
if "google.colab" in sys.modules: # in Colab, the repository lives on your Google Drive
from google.colab import drive
drive.mount("/content/drive")
os.chdir("/content/drive/MyDrive")
os.makedirs("supportdesk-repo", exist_ok=True) # on your own computer: where you started
os.chdir("supportdesk-repo")
for folder in ["supportdesk", "tests"]:
pathlib.Path(folder).mkdir(parents=True, exist_ok=True)
pathlib.Path("supportdesk/__init__.py").write_text('"""The Quillpath support desk assistant (course project)."""\n')
print(sorted(str(p) for p in pathlib.Path(".").rglob("*") if ".git" not in p.parts))Code walkthrough
- In Colab,
drive.mountasks once per session for access to your Drive. The repository is thenMyDrive/supportdesk-repo, still there next session. os.chdirmoves into the repository, so every path below is relative to it.supportdesk/__init__.pymakessupportdeska package Python can import.
You should see ['supportdesk', 'supportdesk/__init__.py', 'tests'] on a new repository.

models/Code walkthrough
.envholds your key on your own computer (course-guide/02); listing it keeps it out of Git.models/will hold TinyLM's trained weights. Anyone can rebuild them in a minute, so they are never committed.
Step 2: Create the model once
Every lesson so far started with the setup cell. In a package it becomes a file, and everything else imports llm from it. The guard from course-guide/02, ask, lives beside it, so no model call is made without it.
%%writefile supportdesk/llm.py

- The setup cell and
ask()from course-guide/02, with one change:PROVIDERreads theSUPPORTDESK_PROVIDERsetting, so you switch provider without editing the file ("groq"when it is not set). max_retries=6waits and retries when the provider says "too many requests";askretries once when the provider rejects a reply, then returns the reason instead of crashing.
import importlib
import supportdesk.llm
importlib.reload(supportdesk.llm) # pick up the file just written, even on a rerun
from supportdesk.llm import MODELS, PROVIDER
print("provider:", PROVIDER, "->", MODELS[PROVIDER])Code walkthrough
- Importing
supportdesk.llmruns the file once: it reads the key and buildsllm. Nothing is sent yet. importlib.reloadmatters only on a rerun: Python caches imported files, and this makes it read the new one.
You should see provider: groq -> groq:openai/gpt-oss-20b, or the Gemini line if you set SUPPORTDESK_PROVIDER to gemini.
Step 3: Write the shared data into the package
supportdesk/data.py holds the blocks of course-guide/06 that later modules read, copied exactly, with the print lines left out: dates, plans and policy, labels, the help centre, all 36 tickets, the billing records, the refund rule, the baseline numbers and TinyLM's corpus. The pilot incident stays out until Module 10 adds it.

You should see 36 tickets: 24 dev and 12 test; 12 articles; corpus 408,165 characters, then ('T-1001', 'en', 'team') gold: ('billing', 'high', 'billing-refunds').
Step 4: Triage the dev set and score it
Lesson 1 sent T-1001 to a model and compared the reply with Lena's label. Lesson 4 scored all 24 dev tickets and gave the score an interval. Here both become functions in supportdesk/baseline.py, built on ask, so a refused reply is a named result, not a crash.

You should see the model's score with its interval, then always how_to: 6 of 24, 95% interval 12% to 45%. Write Maya's sentence in Lesson 4's form: the score, the interval, the set size. If the two intervals overlap, the model has not yet shown it beats a constant answer. Read the wrong tickets against their definitions before blaming the model; Lesson 4 found T-1004 hard for good reasons.
Step 5: Put TinyLM in the package
Lesson 1 trained TinyLM in a notebook and lost it when the session ended. Later modules open it up again: probabilities in Module 3, attention in Module 7, LoRA in Module 9. So it moves into supportdesk/tinylm.py, with a function that trains it once, saves it, and loads it after that.

On our CPU run the log ended at 0.217 and the least certain token was 0.721; on a GPU the last digits may differ.
Step 6: Test it without a key, and commit
Tests that call a provider are slow, use up free quota and fail when the provider does. These use a scripted stand-in for the model, so they run with no key, here and in a CI job in Module 10. Importing supportdesk.llm builds the client, so conftest.py, which pytest runs first, supplies a placeholder key; nothing is sent.

QA[5][1]is the corpus's annual-refund answer. load_or_train()[2] == []is true only when the model was loaded, not trained again.
You should see seven lines starting PASS. If "the score beats always how_to" fails, read the no answer list from Step 4: a run of provider_error means the provider was struggling, not that the model cannot triage.
Break it
Tomasz is tidying the code. He notices that TinyLM's reply looks the same with or without is_causal=True and proposes dropping it: "one less thing to explain." Try it: make attention look both ways, ask the trained model the same question, run the causal test, then train a fresh model the new way for 200 steps.

test failed: a position read a later token
fresh model, training log: [(1, 7.691), (100, 4.219), (200, 4.225)]The demo looks perfect. When TinyLM generates, the last position has no later token to read, so the reply does not change, and nothing errors. But in training every position sees the very token it is asked to predict. On our CPU run the new-style training stalled at about 4.2, where the honest model had reached 1.546 by step 200 (Step 5). The change would have broken every model trained after it, and only the test noticed on the day it was made. A model that looks right on one example is not checked; Lesson 4 said the same about hosted models.
