Overview
The Forward Deployed Engineer interview, answered. Eight volumes take the role from what it is and how it differs from a software or solutions engineer, through customer discovery and solution design, integration and data work in someone else's estate, AI, RAG and agent solutions, deployment under enterprise security, production reliability and debugging, and customer ownership and adoption, to full end-to-end engagement simulations. Every question carries a worked answer in the first person, with the trade-off named and a concrete example attached, so you can hear what a strong answer actually sounds like.
What you will learn
- Explain what an FDE owns, and how the role differs from software, solutions and consulting
- Run a discovery conversation that finds the problem behind the request
- Talk through integration, data and migration work in an estate you do not control
- Design and defend a RAG or agent solution, including how you would evaluate it
- Answer deployment, networking and enterprise security questions without hand-waving
- Debug a production incident out loud, and say how you would stop it recurring
- Handle ownership, adoption, escalation and handover questions with evidence
Included with the kit
- 25 written parts, yours for good
- 15h 38m of reading, measured not estimated
- Written for the intermediate level
- Every future revision included
- UPI, cards and netbanking
Prerequisites
- Some engineering experience; the answers assume you have shipped something
- No prior forward-deployed or customer-facing experience needed
